How did I end up with this job anyway?

Hello. Welcome to Bug Banter, the official blog of Do My Own Pest Control. com. I am one of the writers here at DMOPC. Otherwise known as BugGirl.

The fact that I research bugs professionally is a bit ironic because, I hate bugs. “So what “  you think. “Everyone hates bugs“  right?  Wrong. Maybe you think you hate bugs. But I would argue that my aversion to six-legged arthropods is far more extreme than the basic distaste that most people naturally feel. It is not so much a matter of preference as a clinical condition. Take it away dictionary.com….

pho⋅bi⋅a: (noun) “A persistent, abnormal, and irrational fear of a specific thing or situation that compels one to avoid it, despite the awareness and reassurance that it is not dangerous.”

There it is. Abnormal. Irrational. That’s me and bugs. I have Bug Phobia. Here is what typically happens when I see a bug in my environment: My heart rate skyrockets; I get hot and cold flashes; I start sweating; I scream and cry hysterically whilst flinging my hands wildly about and  bouncing up and down.

My husband laughs at me. He claims that bugs are oblivious of me, and besides, their mouths are far too minuscule to pose any serious threat. Even if a bug did try to swallow me whole I could easily squash it with a newspaper. Or my shoe. I am so much bigger.

This logic does little to console me. Anything that is small enough to crawl inside my ear unnoticed in the night and lay eggs near my brain while I am sleeping is dangerous in my book.

So how is it that I came to be a bug researcher, writer, and now blogger? Two words: Cruel fate.

My two older brothers happen to be the CEOs of  Do My Own Pest Control, an online company that sells do-it-yourself pest control products. In 2006 they invited me to write articles for their growing web business. To date I have written over 400 bug and pest control product related articles. Ultimately, my job as a bug writer has served only to  further intensify my hyper paranoia of the creepy things which constantly surround all of us. To make matters worse, several days ago my brothers approached me about kicking off the company blog. All I could do was stare in disbelief and think, what the heck? A bug blog? What am I going to write about? What can you really say about bugs? Who will read it?

Even now as I write the first official post, I still don’t know the answers to those questions. But I can promise that whatever you find here in the future will be relevant, informative, entertaining and as always, very buggy.
